PRI is the standard for providing telecommunication services to offices. It is based on the T-carrier (T1) line in the US and Canada, and the E-carrier (E1) line in Europe. The Primary Rate Interface (PRI) is a standardized telecommunications service level within the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) specification for carrying multiple DS0 voice and data transmissions between a network and a user. The Primary Rate Interface (PRI) consists of 23 64-kbit/s B-channels and one 64-kbit/s D-channel using a T1 line, often referred to as “23B + D”, (North American and Japanese standard) or 30 B-channels and one D-channel using an E1 line (Europe/rest of world). Each B-channel carries data, voice, and other services. The D-channel carries control and signaling information, Caller ID, via the SS7 Signaling Network.

The Primary Rate Interface channels are typically used by medium to large enterprises with digital PBXs to provide them digital access to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The 23 B-channels can be used flexibly and reassigned when necessary to meet special needs such as video conferences. The Primary Rate user is hooked up directly to the telephone company central office.

In Telecommunications, a long-distance call is a telephone call made outside a certain area, usually characterized by an area code outside of a local call area (known in the United States as a Local Access Transport Area or LATA). The most common class of long-distance is often called interstate long-distance, though the more accurate term is inter-LATA interstate long-distance. Another form of long-distance, increasingly relevant to more U.S. states, is known as inter-LATA intrastate long-distance. This refers to a calling area outside of the customer’s LATA but within the customer’s state. Often, in large LATAs, there is also a class known by the oxymoronic name local long-distance or Intra-LATA which refers to calls within the customer’s LATA but outside of their local calling area.

There are two rate structures of Long Distance charges offerred by most Telecommunication providers, “Switched and Dedicated”. Switched plans are applied to landlines. Meaning business phone Lines and some Baby Bell (ATT, Qwest, Verizon) Voice T-1s (PRI, Supertrunk). It is called switched long distance, because upon dialing the destination number, the phone immediately connects to a switch, connecting the call. Dedicated long distance does not require this switching. Instead, the customer has installed a dedicated circuit between the customer’s premises and the long distance phone carrier’s POP. The local phone company is not involved in switching the call to the dedicated long distance carrier. Normally, the customer’s telephone system switches the call to the dedicated line at the customer’s facility. The customer will enjoy significantly lower per minute toll charges from the long distance company.

A toll-free (1-800 number) is a special telephone number which is free to the calling party, and instead the telephone carrier charges the called party the cost of the call. A toll-free number is assigned from a special dialing prefix range (also known as area code) such as 800, 866, 877, 888, etc. The price of the call to the called party is usually based on factors such as the amount of usage, the number experiences, the cost of the trunk lines to the facility, and possibly a monthly flat rate service charge. There are also many features avialable with toll-free service which is called Enhanced Toll Free such as: Time-of-Day (TOD) Routing, Day of Week (DOW) or Day of Year (DOY) Routing, Area Code or Exchange Routing, Percentage Allocation Routing, All-Trunks-Busy Routing, Ring No Answer Routing, Emergency or Disaster Routing, and Take Back and Transfer / Transfer Connect / Agent Redirect.

What is SIP trunking? Business SIP trunking service provides businesses with a platform for deploying business IP technologies including Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service. Business SIP trunking is rapidly changing the way that businesses communicate by offering greater flexibility, increased cost-savings and additional service features not found with traditional phone service. SIP trunk service allows for the replacement of traditional fixed PSTN lines with connectivity via the SIP trunk provider through the Internet. SIP trunking service carries voice, data and video traffic over a single line allowing for greater productivity.

There are several important aspects to consider when selecting business VoIP and SIP trunking service which include reliability and cost-savings. Today, many businesses have 30-40% excess capacity on their current data service. With business SIP trunking service, excess bandwidth can be utilized for voice traffic. Your business can experience greater cost-savings by utilizing this excess bandwidth. However, it is important to ensure your business has enough bandwidth available to support voice traffic or reliability and call quality may suffer. Business SIP trunking requires three components which include: (1) PBX/ IP PBX, (2) edge device that can handle the traversal of SIP traffic and (3) a SIP trunk from an ITSP. Contact one of our SIP specialists to find out whether or not SIP trunking is the right solution for your communications needs.

Carrier Consulting is a leading provider of business SIP trunking service and represents all of the major SIP trunking providers worldwide. Check SIP trunking service availability, access SIP trunk pricing and get your SIP trunking questions answered. Contact one of our SIP trunking service specialists today by calling toll free (800) 987-4000.

Business VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) utilizes your existing broadband Internet connection to place and receive business phone calls. Often traditional business local and long distance services can be costly. However, you can make calls to local, long distance, mobile and even International phone numbers seamlessly with Business VoIP Solutions. When you utilize a Business VoIP-to-VoIP network, you eliminate local and long distance charges. There are also substantial savings for Business VoIP customers making calls to non-VoIP numbers. Business VoIP services are suitable for small and midsized businesses as well as large enterprises with multiple locations.

There are several options available when it comes to Business VoIP service. For many businesses, a Hosted IP PBX, Virtual PBX or Managed VoIP are the most cost-effective and quickest way to implement a high quality Business VoIP Solution. SIP Trunking Service is another option that is used in IP telephony and Business VoIP deployment. With a Hosted PBX, your business will be able to access VoIP services without the large initial investment. With a Managed PBX, your business can focus on what it does best by outsourcing the management of your PBX system. With SIP Trunking, your business is able to converge both voice and data onto a single connection that interfaces to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).

Business VoIP service is loaded with feature rich service options including remote office for mobile and virtual workers, voicemail as email and more. Business VoIP service providers also offer true Quality of Service (QoS) which affords businesses greater flexibility through prioritization of voice and data traffic. Carrier Consulting can help with you VOIP Service options contact us toll free (800) 987-4000 or the contact form to the right.

What is MPLS? Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) networking technology directs and carries data from one network endpoint to another. With MPLS network services, your business can seamlessly create virtual links between multiple locations within a Wide Area Network (WAN). The result is that your business can run more efficiently as MPLS service prioritizes voice, data or video traffic for improved communications across your MPLS network.

MPLS protocol is classified within the packet switching family and is available worldwide through various MPLS providers. How does an MPLS network work? Within an MPLS network, data packets that originate from one location are assigned labels. All packet forwarding decisions are based solely on the contents of the label without the need to examine the packet. Once the packets arrive at the destination, the MPLS network edge device removes the label to present the data in its original form. MPLS network services allow your business network to operate more efficiently and securely.

There are several benefits associated with MPLS network services. MPLS network service offers greater reliability and security, cost-savings as well as greater flexibility. Not to mention greater network performance, lower latency, packet loss and less network congestion. MPLS network service is “multi protocol” meaning that MPLS service supports various transport services including T1, T3, DS3, OCn and Ethernet. MPLS network services are highly scalable which reduces capital and operating expenditures as well as required IT staff needed to administer the network.

In telecommunications, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is a standardized approach to digital data transmission for sending and receiving voice, data and multimedia over a single network. ATM is a multiplexing and switching technology that utilizes a fixed-size packet, called a cell, to transfer data. Each cell is identified with virtual circuit identifiers which are contained in the cell header. ATM can handle high bandwidth requirements and operate over wire or optical fiber. ATM supports local area networking (LAN) and wide area networking (WAN).

Carrier Consulting offers ATM wide area network design and consulting services. We offer access to over 40 telecom carriers, data centers and equipment providers worldwide.
In telecommunications, a frame relay network is a service used to transfer data traffic between Local Area Networks (LANs) and between end-points in a Wide Area Network (WAN). Frame relay networks utilizes variable-size units or “frames” and leaves error correction data up to the network end-points. This process allows frame relay networks to operate efficiently. With a frame relay network, the network provides a Permanent Virtual Circuit (PVC). Frame relay networks are considered a fast packet technology which means that when an error is detected the error frame is dropped. It is the responsibility of the end point within a frame relay network to detect and retransmit any dropped packets.

Although an outdated technology, frame relay networks are still used to connect LANs to WANs and major backbones. Frame relay networks are not an ideal for voice or video transmissions. However, frame relay networks provide a useful infrastructure for data transmissions. Frame relay networks can incorporate packets from different protocols including Ethernet. Frame relay can have up to a 45 Mbps local loop to a 44.21 Mbps port. Frame relay network service is available from a wide range of telecommunications carriers including AT&T, CenturyLink(Qwest), Verizon, Sprint and more.

In telecommunications, Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) is a Layer 2 Ethernet Virtual Private Network (VPN) enabling the connection of multiple Ethernet sites over MPLS private or metro networks. With Virtual Private LAN Service VPLS, all sites appear to be on the same LAN regardless of their geographical location. Furthermore, each site has its own Ethernet VPLS that is completed segregated from other customers across the share carrier network. Virtual Private LAN Service VPLS was created to overcome the limitations and challenges posed by ATM and Frame Relay which included providing protocol transparent, any-to-any, fully meshed network across a Wide Area Network (WAN).

Virtual Private LAN Service VPLS is based on native Ethernet which simplifies the LAN/WAN boundary for both carriers and customers. Therefore, Virtual Private LAN Service allows for rapid provisioning with the flexibility to add or change bandwidth at any time because the service bandwidth is not tied to the physical interface. Virtual Private LAN Service VPLS supports a wide range of bandwidth speeds ranging from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps in increments of 1 Mbps.

There are several benefits associated with Virtual Private LAN Service VPLS. Virtual Private LAN Service VPLS is transparent, protocol independent and offers a multipoint solution with a shared bandwidth pool for remote sites. With Virtual Private LAN Service, you are in complete control of switching and routing between sites. However, Virtual Private LAN Service VPLS offer a more simplistic approach to Wide Area Networking and therefore offers ease of management. Furthermore, Virtual Private LAN Service is cost-effective and offers scalability not found in other networking technologies.

What is cloud computing service? In telecommunications, cloud computing refers to Internet based computing also known as virtualization, whereby shared resources, software and information are provided to computers and devices on-demand in the cloud. The cloud is a reference to the Internet. Business cloud computing services directly contrast with traditional computing as there is no need to install applications or save files to a personal computer. A common example of cloud computing service is Yahoo email or Gmail. Users do not need software or a server to use the email service.

There are several segments associated with business cloud computing services which include the following: (1) applications, (2) platforms and (3) infrastructure. The applications refer to the on-demand software also referred to as Software as a Service (SaaS). There are several forms of payments including subscription fees and licensing. Within cloud computing services, platforms are product offerings used to deploy to the Internet. Active platforms allow the end user to access applications from centralized servers using the Internet. For example, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform is Windows Live and Rackspace has cloudservers, cloudsites and cloudfiles. Infrastructure plays a vital role in cloud computing services and is the backbone of the entire concept. Within cloud computing, infrastructure provides the environment necessary to allow users to build applications. Infrastructure also includes storage services for cloud computing.

Metro Ethernet services can be used to connect to a business to a Local Area Network (LAN), individual end users to a Wide Area Network (WAN) or to the Internet. Metro Ethernet can be used to connect branches, campuses or offices to an Intranet. Metro Ethernet services can be configured as a star network or mesh network. With Metro Ethernet, Customer Equipment (CE) attaches to the Metro Ethernet Network using standard 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps or 40 Gbps Ethernet connections.

Metro Ethernet is offered by a wide range of Metro Ethernet providers in large metropolitan areas and across the wide area. Metro Ethernet services are becoming increasingly popular due to the many benefits associated with the service. The benefits of Metro Ethernet services include ease of use, cost-savings and flexibility.

Carrier Consulting provides MPLS network services from leading MPLS providers worldwide. Speak with a Carrier Consulting Telecom consultant today by calling toll free (800) 987-4000 for MPLS quotes, MPLS pricing and MPLS network service information and expert advice.

Contact one of our SIP trunking service specialists today by calling toll free (800) 987-4000
